Understanding Worldometer Statistics – a potentially wonderful tool to understand the statistics about the world that we think we know, or have an approximate understanding of… I need to understand the data that we have to understand our planet.
Analysis of Data
Steps and Calculations Explanation:
Basically,
- I’ve used data provided by Worldometer.com to populate a spreadsheet,
- I cleaned up the data so that formulae could be applied, taking the numbers provided later on the timeline 27052023 to subtract the data on the earlier timeline to show the difference that has taken place over those 2 days
- The difference over the 2 days is represented in the column – “The changes over 2 days”, and needs analysis.
Points to be aware of in the data
- Some of the data states a period of a year, and the calculations thereafter would be correct, they would show accurately the change in data over 2 days as per the site.
- Some of the data states a period of a day, and the calculations would not have results that can be used, as the only difference between numbers would be based on the time of day in which the results were recorded for purposes of the spreadsheet.
- Possible improvements needed: For calculations with periods day, it would assist if the recordings were made at the same time daily. This would at least allow a point of comparison, and analysis. #To-Do.
World Population Numbers
So the human population grew over the 2 day period by 409385 people (409,385). Welcome to the planet peeps.
Government & Economics
Car production numbers over the 2 day period grew by 525018 over the last 2 days (525,018). Wow, it beats the number of people coming into existence by over a hundred thousand. 100 000. Obviously public transport is not proving to be the preferred means of transportation if there is still such a high demand for vehicles.
Bicycle production over the 2 day period: 959916 (959,916) Just under 1 million new bicycles. Hmmm…
The number of items defined as “computers” produced over the 2 day period is 1436386 (1,436,386). Almost one and a half million new computers. #To-Do, find out what these stats mean when they say “computers”.
Environment Analysis
Forest loss in hectares over the two day period: 31,825
Land loss to soil erosion over the two day period in hectares: 42,846
C0^2 Emissions in tons over two days: 2,238,126,810
Desertification this year in hectares over 2 days: 73,436
Toxic chemicals released in tons over two days: 59,926
Food
Items related to money spent on Obesity related diseases in the USA today, and Money spent on weight loss in the USA today – as fields cannot truly be considered over the two day period analysis, as they are based on a point in time in the day. It is not cumulative numbers which can be subtracted from each other. Still the numbers are enormous.
Thoughts: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people didn’t get sick from being overweight, and if somehow that could help the planet as well. If I could offer the world sunshine and green, and happiness and calm – I would. #To-Do
Water
Celebration!! Yay! One point to celebrate in the data; People with no access to safe drinking water decreased by -56,329 over the two day period. Let’s hope they are sharing this gift with other earthlings. Linking here to my observation about the baby kiewiet in my backyard that can only eat food when water is splashed on the ground for it to be able to pickup nutrients, food and greens.
Deaths caused by water related diseases over the two days; 5,153 people.
Energy
Renewable Energy sources provided 16,460,737 vs Energy from non-renewable sources 93,048,606. If the two are totaled, it means energy needed was 109,509,343 and 15,03 percent of this total was renewable, and 84,97 percent is still non-renewable. Days to the end of our oil usage is supposedly 40 years, and that would mainly be cars I think and oil driven generators perhaps. Days to the end of coal is supposedly 147,741 days but this is dependent on country reserves and if the quality of those reserves matches the technology that is using it.
Health
Death numbers are a bit hard to stomach at this point.
